Allowing the water to run straight through its multiple layers, a permeable driveway’s porous surface makes it a top choice for many. Cleaning the water as it filters through, this green driveway choice ends up safely back in the ground- free from toxins.
Not surprisingly, permeable pavements are everywhere, from footpaths to carparks and walkways. Composed of recycled materials that create a robust and durable material, this is a green material that remains cool in the summer and ice-free in the winter.

While there is no legal requirement that says that driveways or surfaces can’t be made from a non-permeable material (such as concrete), if you do decide to use a non-permeable material you will need to comply with SUDS regulations. This typically requires the installation of drainage channels that will catch any surface water run-off. We would always recommend using permeable materials wherever possible.
Yes although some more so than others. The use of aggregates and gravel provide the most permeable surface as well as the most eco-friendly in terms of sourcing and manufacturing. Any surface that mitigates the risk of surface water build-up and potential flooding (i.e. permeable and porous materials) is more eco-friendly than those materials which create surface water flooding.
The best example of a permeable material is aggregate or gravel. however, most resin and block paved driveways can be installed using permeable/porus materials meaning that you would be compliant with SUDS.
